In 2008, I got my first rangefinder Leica M8 and started taking pictures of anything that caught my attention in the streets of Tokyo. In the beginning, I never gave much thought as to what statement I wanted to make with my photos; they were made out of the pure curiosity and fascination I have for the city, especially the people and things they do in public. As I made more photos, I realized that my subconsciousness had had its eye on moments that reflected "freedom". I admire people who still try to maintain "freedom" while struggling to fit into the system of a city that's filled with stress and intimidation. By freedom, I am referring to the ability to still be who they are and do things they really enjoy. I named the book "Mad Tokyo"; "Mad" as in "unrestrained". "Mad Tokyo" is both a reality and a fantasy. It's a reality because the photographs are all real people in real situations. It's a fantasy because these moments in the photographs are rare and of my very personal ideal selections.
